Governments are getting into SL with virtual conferencing. Do we need them in RL?

According to an article on foxnews.com, US government officials attended a conference on climate change through Second Life. One of them, US Representative Edward Markey, who could not leave Washington for the conference, attended as his virtual self and interacted with other participants in a virtual setting of the Bali conference. Markey was quoted as saying, “This is my first foray into Second Life, but it won’t be my last.”

Will this mean that we won’t need any conferences in future? Saves a lot on travel expenses, I’d love to see a breakdown on travel expenses for politicians, their spouses and their overseas shopping.

Next step .. do we need any offices for politicians? Cars? Maybe they can all shift into SL and save countless taxpayers countless dollars.
